How Good are Italian Wines?  E-mail
I am just back from a four day visit to Tuscany, with some wine investors. We visited some ofImage the best producers from Bolgheri, down to Montalcino, and finishing in Chianti. Two things emerged, first that British wine collectors are totally prejudiced in favour of France - we debated long and hard about the merits of one country versus the other in quality terms.

And secondly that Tuscan and probably wines from the other top area Piedmont, don't last as well as top claret. We tasted a number of delicious 1990s, and the occasional 1985, but earlier the wines were either badly made or just dont last.

For me all the debate is irrelevent, I am quite happy sitting under the trees in Tuscan sunshine drinking the best the region can offer and eating the great cuisine. Claret, or Burgundy for that matter would be totally out of place, and if one is lucky enough to get some old well kept Biondi Santi even better.

Apart from that I have to say we tasted a lot of "bull shit" wines, over hyped, over packaged and over expensive, but the girls serving them made up for it.
