A growing swathe of wines are emerging from the foothills of the Pyrenees, giving a vigorous boost to the reputation of the wines of Roussillon. Roussillon has always been a major wine producing area of France (currently producing more than 30% of all French wine) and grows a wide variety of grapes such as Syrah, Grenache, Muscat to more international varieties such as sauvignon and chardonnay. Roussillon wines have been on the up for the last fifteen years as a very serious attitude has been applied to the production of fine wines and the characteristics and complexities.The appellations that best represent the region are beginning to gain familiarity to a new generation of wine drinkers that either travel here to bask in the bohemian landscape of “le Midi” (This part of France has for over a century played host to artists such as Matisse, Dali, Chagall, etc), or who have seen these names debuting on the wine lists of quality restaurants.
